SUMMARY:SALON: Featuring A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf & All Fours by Miranda July
DESCRIPTION:Show date: 7 Sep 2025 \n\n\nLocation: The Pride Center at Equality Park | 2040 N Dixie Hwy\, Wilton Manors\, FL 33305 \nTime: 2:30pm-4:00pm \nA Readers’ Series featuring Feminist & LGBTQ+ Texts. \nThis 2024 “New York Times Bestseller” by novelist\, screenwriter\, and director Miranda July is a courageous and provocative novel about an unnamed 45-year-old woman who abruptly halts a cross-country trip from Los Angeles to New York\, instead checking into a motel in a small town. What begins as a brief detour becomes an extended\, existential pause that challenges her ideas of desire\, identity\, aging\, and autonomy. Told with July’s signature blend of vulnerability\, humor\, and absurdity\, the novel blurs the line between fiction and memoir\, plumbing the depths of a woman’s inner life as she navigates middle age\, life’s purpose\, and artistic reinvention. \nReaders are also invited to read A Room of One’s Own (1929) by Virginia so that we might discuss how these two works\, nearly a century apart\, explore enduring themes of importance to women. \nThinking Cap Theatre presents SALON\, an ongoing Readers’ Series featuring LGBTQ+ and Feminist Texts (nonfiction\, novels\, plays) curated by TCT’s Artistic Director. \nThe aim of the series is to provide a sustained space to foster friendships and dialogue on themes of historical and ongoing importance to LGBTQ+ women and straight allies. Now more than ever\, we need conversation\, community\, and allyship! \nPrior to the event\, participants will be emailed a one-page discussion handout.\nCatered refreshments are included in the registration cost. This session’s menu will include appetizers\, dessert\, wine\, and non-alcoholic beverages.\nBooks must be purchased separately by each participant. \nThis program was made possible by a joint grant from The Our Fund Foundation and The Community Foundation of Broward.

SUMMARY:Women’s Equality Day
DESCRIPTION: Show date: 26 Aug 2025 \n\n\nLocation: Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center\, 1770 Monroe Street Hollywood\, FL 33020 \nTime: 7pm \nMake no mistake\, America’s Suffragettes had a sense of humor\, plenty of talent\, and big plans to effect change that would benefit future generations of women. \nIn Thinking Cap Theatre’s special lineup\, audiences will experience live performances of suffragette comedies and songs written between 1900-1920 and enjoy a celebratory reception. \nDoors will open at 6:45pm for the reception\, which will be accompanied by a live pianist\, performing popular music from the early twentieth century. \nLive performances in the theater will begin promptly at 7:30pm. The program will be approximately 1-hour long. Dessert\, conversation\, and photos will follow in the lobby. \nMore about the Plays \nDubbed “parlor plays\,” these short suffragette comedies were privately printed and originally intended for amateur performance at home in\, you guessed it\, people’s parlors. In the late 1970s\, while doing research at Radcliffe College\, scholar Bettina Friedl rediscovered these long forgotten treasures and compiled them into a special edition. These dramatic gems humorously and pointedly tackle issues such as the work/life balance dilemma and the oppressiveness of socially-prescribed gender roles. Viewers can expect to enjoy some laughs and marvel at both how far we’ve come and how we’ve still to go in the journey for equal human rights. \nThis program was made possible by a joint grant from The Our Fund Foundation and The Community Foundation of Broward.
