ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS | A Playwriting Workshop Series & Public Performance

Have you ever felt compelled to write, but also felt stuck and unsure how to begin? If so, this is the workshop for you.

Utilizing the playwriting methods of Maria Irene Fornes, an OffOff Broadway pioneer and author of more than 40 plays, TCT will offer workshops, rehearsals, and a professional public performance to a select cohort of participants. Writing Goal: Participants will write 10-minute scenes or short plays. If participants write longer pieces during the workshop process, they may select a 10-minute excerpt for rehearsal and presentaton at the public performance.

Fornes began as a visual artist and took up playwriting on a whim, grabbing a cookbook and using the first sentence on a random page as a launchpad. Her whimsical and holistic approach to playwriting helps remove barriers to creativity. Fornes also had a fascination with animals, hence the name of this series (TCT’s 3rd Fornes-inspired workshop series to date). Animals appear across Fornes' canon in strange and interesting ways, reminding us of our interconnectedness with all living beings. As a theme, Animal Encounters is meant to ignite, but not limit, the imaginations of participating writers.

* No prior playwriting experience is needed to participate.
* All work presented in the culminating public performance must have been inspired by and written during the workshop process.
